"i for one welcome our new intel overlords"

. . . but not really.

Yep, Apple is going to be a Switcher. And I'm somewhat pissed about it.

I really had bought into the argument that RISC processors were the right solution for the long term, and that PowerPC was more scalable than Intel, etc etc. If nothing else, Intel processors meager register set really sucks.

Perhaps the worst thing is that it is going to be very hard to convince anyone to buy a new mac for the next year, at least. Sigh.

I've come to accept the decision at this point, except for one detail. . .

I'd be fine with this whole thing if Steve Jobs hadn't said that Apple was shifting its entire product line over to Intel. Look, the reality is that the G5 is good for some programs (e.g. scientific applications), and may continue to be the better choice. Why make such a strong statement?

Why not say: "by 2007, all Mac laptops will be running on Intel processors." This way, you leave the verdict for desktops open. Developers in their right mind will still click on both check boxes when they compile their programs (and do the testing, etc, as they are now).

The way you're phrasing things now, there's no incentive to spend much time on Altivec optimizations and the like.
